Design Assessment of a Train Bearing Housing:

An assessment of a bearing housing for use on a rail vehicle was performed to determine if the design had sufficient strength and an infinite fatigue life.Optimization of the design was undertaken to achieve the required fatigue life.

Process Industry Equipment Failure:

Following the failure of the drum head of a Through Air Dryer, resulting in the complete shut-down of a paper mill, Eatec undertook an assessment to determine whether further failures of the assembly were likely. It was shown that under the maximum operating conditions, further failures would occur, and hence a claim for a replacement drum was submitted.  Eatec provided technical support to the client during the litigation process.
Failure of a Quarry Screen:

for detailed assessment
A quarry screen which is used to sort crushed rock started to crack soon after entering service.  By measuring the motions of the corners of the screen, it was possible to identify that the first torsional mode of the screen was being excited by the drive mechanism.  Through the use of finite element modeling, potential design modifications were investigated to identify the optimum changes to prevent resonance.  No further cracking of the modified design occurred.

Rubber Property Predictor:

The stress-strain behaviour of rubber is sensitive to composition and processing, and is difficult to predict.  A software tool, based on a neural network, was developed to enable “virtual” testing of possible rubber compounds. The use of the tool has led to significant time and cost savings in achieving required rubber characteristics.

Seal Reliability Analysis Tool:

for detailed assessment
The reliability of the bearing seals on drill bits used in the oil and gas industry is fundamental to the life of the bit.  A client has a programme of continuous improvement of seal design based on field performance.  Performance data needed to be processed such that reliability metrics could be generated and compared. An analysis tool was generated and embedded in an Excel spreadsheet which enabled non-specialists to produce reliability results in graphical and tabular forms.
Database Application:
Test Results Database:

for detailed assessment

Large quantities of test results had been obtained over a long period, and were stored using different formats, making searching and processing difficult.A test results database system was developed to archive the data and provide comprehensive search and processing functionality.Using the system, changes to product performance which had previously gone unnoticed were identified.
